Let’s shed light on the structural deficit!”

The indomitable
The film offers a profound insight into the past era of gender discrimination within the political landscape of the Bonn Republic. Here, female politicians were regularly confronted with sexualized discrimination and prejudice. Nevertheless, there were courageous women who showed resistance and thus laid the foundations for today’s female politicians.
We watch an excerpt and then discuss….
The portrayal of women in the media today
How are women portrayed in today’s media? Women often appear as victims, prostitutes, housewives or mothers, rarely as superheroes, leaders or bosses. They often appear weak and/or dependent. The focus is mostly on outward appearances, attractiveness and the cult of youth.
Actresses who play mothers are often only a decade older than their movie daughters in real life. Women over 50 are usually only presented as grandmothers, if at all, while male characters such as commissioners or Indiana Jones are also allowed to stand in front of the camera at an advanced age.
What does this mean for our children? Girls grow up with a lack of heroines and predominantly see women in stereotypical roles. Boys rarely see women in management positions. In this way, gender discrimination is passed on to the next generation. These stereotypes become entrenched in the minds of our children and young people and have long-term effects on their view of gender roles.
Some figures
In Europe, only around 20-30% of filmmakers are female; in the USA, the figure is only around 13%. Women are strongly underrepresented in leading roles. In Hollywood films, they only make up about a third of the leading roles. Studies show that men have up to 70-80% of the dialog in some films.
Scientific findings
The Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media has conducted comprehensive and critical studies in this area. These show that the proportion of women in the film industry is often even lower than stated in many reports. According to the institute, women only have around 31% of the speaking roles and only 23% of the leading roles in the world’s most popular films.
